Cocktails and Cinema

Here’s a fun idea for your next Date Night. Find a sitter or arrange a sleepover for the kids (this is the obvious part). If you have another couple or two, even better. We’re going to match up some classic (and sometimes obscure) cocktails with classic movies in which those drinks were enjoyed. Queue them up on Netflix and play bartender! (I’ll do a TV one at a later date…)

First up? Casablanca and the French 75.

(Romantic Drama)
“I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

Casablanca
The drink was created in 1915 at the New York Bar in Paris—later Harry’s New York Bar—by barman Harry MacElhone. The combination was said to have such a kick that it felt like being shelled with the powerful French 75mm field gun. Sounds like fun!!

The Recipe:
1 oz gin
1/2 oz. simple syrup (or 2 tsp. superfine sugar)
1/2 oz. lemon juice
Brut Champagne or other dry sparkling wine
Preparation: Combine gin, sugar, and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into an iced champagne glass. Fill with Champagne. Garnish with a twist of lemon. Here’s lookin’ at you, kid!
Other options: Champagne Cocktails, Cointreau, Brandy
