Parental Writes #11- Show Choir!Paul Reyburn
I don’t know about you, but when I was in high school, there wasn’t a “Show Choir”. We had “Swing Choir” which was basically this:
Stand and sing cheesy arrangements of pop songs. Or, more accurately, sway and sing cheesy arrangements of pop songs.
Now this may be more of a Midwest thing, at least before Glee came along, but at many schools Show Choir is HUGE! 20-25 minute set, non-stop choreography, elaborate costumes, props, and scenery, 50+ members, rockin’ backup bands, crew members crawling in and under the stages, etc…
Yep, that’s a figure skater. On a fake ice sheet. Crazy! And hugely popular. This group went undefeated and won the National Championship a few years ago.
Now, Glee may be able to do stuff like this,
but that’s a tad impractical for the real world.
Duncan just finished up a Show Choir camp last week at Suzanne’s school, which just happens to have one of the top Show Choirs in the country. He was one of 5 boys in the camp – elementary AND Junior High. Someday, that might be a really awesome ratio to him. Someday. Probably sooner than I think.
Anyhoo, they all got a taste of what it takes to be in a successful choir. He seemed to have a good time. A buddy of his took it as well so that helped. They did a medley from “Frozen” (I know, I know…) and the choreography (taught by a couple of high school students) was already fancier than anything we did in high school:
(Not actually my high school)
I have emceed the competition at my wife’s school for the last 15 or so years. Typical outfits are the following:
